The second episode of The Nevers is here and while it wasn’t as exciting as the first episode, it compensated on plot elements. Title of the episode is “Exposure”.
If yo haven’t watched the episode yet, there will be spoilers!
Now that we have another episode, one thing that is clear is that Joss Whedon did not really achieved that grit as advertised and as worthy as an HBO show. While it does not shy away from curse words or nudity, and bloody fist fights there is this ambient that prevails fit for a general audience show. I think it is because of Penance Adair, she makes everything lovable. 🙂
What I am liking about the show is the progress, despite introducing side characters it does not stray from the main plot. Instead, it went straight to explaining some of the questions raised in the first episode. A little disappointed on the dialogues in the second episode, and Frank Mundi does not feel as strong character as he should be.
Hopefully this will continue throughout the rest of the season.
Reveals of the episode:
- Augustus turn is inhabiting the body of birds (possibly other animals) and controlling it, while his body is dozed off, but still conscious
- The masked group that attacked Amalia and Adair in episode one are actually working for Lavinia
- Hugo Swan’s invitation for Augustus for the opening of the Ferryman isn’t only for Augie’s benefit
- Maladie and Amalia have a history (or Sarah and Molly) this is as far as the reveal goes, we will need to wait more details on their past (one possibility is that it isn’t only Amalia in that body, related with the “not my face” line in the first episode)
- The alien ship at the end of episode one crashed on earth.
- Amalia True knows what is the song of Mary, and she almost says it, while under the influence of Desiree, but stops mid-word “Mary is the voice of the Galan–.
- Maladie confirms that she is the only one that remembers the space ship that gave powers to Londoners, however Amalia’s knowledge of Mary’s voice means that she knows something as well, just not sure of the extent of it.
The episodes starts with an Italian girl working in London who is exposed in public that she is one of the touched. She finds a poster for Amalia’s orphanage and tries to get there, only to find out that it was a trap by the same person who employs Amalia True. In this episode we see that Lavinia Bidlow has a serious interest in the touched and is trying to get to them through the orphanage but also through the masked group who is kidnapping touched girls.
Lavinia invites Penance with few of the girls to a party on her estate where the girls will be introduced to “polite” society. Penance feels awkward about this right away, but is persuaded taht this is god for the touched. Once at the party Lavinia hands them blue ribbons to pin on themselves in order to be easily recognized, Penance is clearly distressed by this, she is just to polite to respond properly on this.
While everybody goes to the party, Amalia heads to visit Frank Mundi with her new friend who just happens to be a serum of truth with just standing close by.
The party is a success, Penance and Augustus get some alone time to discuss what it feels like to be touched. This is when we find out what is Augustus’ turn, we also find out that it feels like flying when flying. 🙂 However, their romantic advances are spoiled by Lavinia, who is really turning out to be the main villain in the show who controls everything.
Angry with Augie’s cold demeanor after talking with his sister, Adair leaves the party alone, where she gets intercepted by Maladie’s people and Maladie has the perfect trap prepared. Amalia during her visit in Frank’s office has a short glimpse into the future and goes after Maladie, leaving a message for Frank.
She ends up shooting herself instead of choosing between Mary and Penance. She probably did this because she was certain she would survive, after all she can see the future. But everybody is safe and in the orphanage, if we can call that safe, considering Lavinia owns the orphanage.
And for the episode finale, we get to see that Lavinia has discovered where the space ship crashed and that the core of the ship has starting glowing again, unlike three days ago. This was reported by the American doctor who is most likely performing a lobotomy on those poor touched kidnapped people, as we see them working in excavating the shiny core like robots.
