Yesterday the much appreciated Academy announced the 2014 Oscar nominees for the best of the best in 2013. The nominations are really in the gray area this year as beside the obvious popular contenders (American Hustle, 12 Years A Slave and Gravity and The Wolf) the fact is out of nine movies nominated for Best Motion Picture they all kind of deserve the Oscar. Whoever wins I think audience will agree with the choice.
“Gravity”
“Her”
“American Hustle”
“Nebraska”
“12 Years a Slave”
“Dallas Buyers Club”
“Captain Phillips”
“Philomena”
“The Wolf of Wall Street”
Editors bet: Gravity or Dallas Buyers Club.
Also Gravity will most likely win Best Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing nominations, as throughout the year we kept on hearing and reading articles on how groundbreaking the movie is.
Use the poll in the right sidebar to vote for the movie you think will win the Oscar for Best Film in 2014.
Best Director
Steve McQueen, “12 Years a Slave”
David O. Russell, “American Hustle”
Martin Scorsese, “The Wolf of Wall Street”
Alexander Payne, “Nebraska”
Alfonso Cuaron, “Gravity”
We all know how tight used to be Best Director and Best Motion Picture nominations, as in whichever movie wins the director of that film will get the bets director Oscar, but since the Academy updated the number of Best Film nominations it kind of feels that the movies that don;t have directors nominated don’t stand the chance to win the Oscar for best film.
Best Actor
Bruce Dern, “Nebraska”
Christian Bale, “American Hustle”
Matthew McConaughey, “Dallas Buyers Club”
Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Wolf of Wall Street”
Chiwetel Ejiofor, “12 Years a Slave”
I am really not sure what to say about the Best Actor nominations, we all want Leonardo DiCaprio to win, and not because of all the jokes and memes that are buzzing though the internet over the past few years, but because he really deserves it for his portrayal of Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street.
Best Actress
Sandra Bullock, “Gravity”
Amy Adams, “American Hustle”
Cate Blanchett, “Blue Jasmine”
Meryl Streep, “August: Osage County”
Judi Dench, “Philomena”
Due to the overall popularity of Gravity, Sandra Bullock seems to have a chance to win her second career. Amy Adams is the least expected winner for the Best Actress Oscar, while Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep (her 18th Oscar nomination) and Judi Dench are equal among the best. It is interesting that with all new Hollywood actresses and celebrities we have a list of five actresses that audience and film makers both truly respect. Kudos to the Academy for this!
Best Animated Film
“Ernest & Celestine”
“The Croods”
“Frozen”
“Despicable Me 2”
“The Wind Rises”
The Wind Rises and Ernest & Celestine are the art type of animation unlike the popular blockbusters Frozen, The Croods and despicable Me 2. Honest opinion, Despicable Me 2 ad The Croods don’t seem to have a chance because the stories were a bit cliche, many consider Frozen a surprise of the year due to its success on the Box Office (the movie is 8 weeks either first or second on the top ten list, which is a serious achievement for films these days). So it’s more likely Frozen to win or one of the “artsy” animations The Wind Rises or Ernest & Celestine.[one_half]
Best Supporting Actress
Lupita Nyong’o, “12 Years a Slave”
Jennifer Lawrence, “American Hustle”
Julia Roberts, “August: Osage County”
Sally Hawkins, “Blue Jasmine”
June Squibb, “Nebraska”

Best Supporting Actor
Michael Fassbender, “12 Years a Slave”
Jonah Hill, “The Wolf of Wall Street”
Barkhad Abdi, “Captain Phillips”
Bradley Cooper, “American Hustle”
Jared Leto, “Dallas Buyers Club”

Final count:
“Gravity” – 10 Oscar Nominations
“American Hustle” – 10 Oscar Nominations
“12 years A Slave” – 9 Oscar Nominations
“Dallas Byers Club” and “Captain Phillips” – 6 Oscar Nominations each
“Her”, “Nebraska” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” – 5 Oscar Nominations each
Good luck to all of the movies, actors, actresses and directors at the 86th Academy Awards on March 2nd, 2014 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.[/full_width]
