I just saw Gravity with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, the movie as you all know has been nominated for Best Motion Picture and nine more nominations which makes it the movie with most nominations along with American Hustle.
I honestly didn’t know what to expect from the movie, I knew some of the plot and I was getting different signals form various people who have already seen it. Some said it was boring and some were saying that it wasn’t really deserving all the hype.
But nobody said anything about the tension the movie carries throughout the entire 84 minutes of screen action. It’s the most tense movie I’ve seen since Prisoners (on a side note, can’t believe it had so little nominations, as Prisoners is truly a surprise, one of the best films I’ve seen in the last 5 or so years). The only difference, when it comes to keeping you tense, is that Prisoners is sort of mystery and you just want the movie to be as long as possible, and goes on for over two hours, while Gravity the tension that the movie generates makes you wish for it to be as short as possible but in a good way because you sympathize with the main protagonist Dr. Ryan Stone.
The only flaw of the movie is it’s emotional story which is weak and not really worked on, there are only few lines that hold it together. Maybe it would have been better to be completely omitted from the movie, but who knows.
The story is fictional, science fiction of course, now wait a minute, is it science fiction? Alfonso Cuaron does a great job and so does the cast. I haven’t seen the other movies in the category for Best Actress but Sandra Bullock looks at a pretty good chance to win her second Oscar. George Clooney is the “comic relief” :).
BTW the visuals in Gravity are stunning, you must see it in 3D, HD or whatever high-tech abbreviations it comes in. Stunning!
An interesting fact is that the movie has only 7 cast members out of which only Sandra Bullock and Geroge Cloony can be seen, while form the rest of the cast we only hear their voices. Ed Harris is mission control for example.
