The Veronica Mars movie will be available for download on March 14th

The same day the Veronica Mars movie will hit US theaters it will also be available for streaming online or to be downloaded. Rob Thomas, the show creator and movie director confirms this on his Kickstarter project page.

Well marshmallows, there you go, on March 14th when Veronica Mars the movie will be released in cinemas across US the movie will also be made available on iTunes or Amazon, or on-demand cable and satellite providers.

Rob Thomas, the show creator has explained this in a message to all backers who donated money through Kickstarter saying that after trying to get the movie in as much as possible theaters, the studio decided on a same day digital release also.

As I explained in the last update, getting a movie into a theater might sound easy, but believe me: I had courtside seats this season, and it’s not.

So backers who backed the movie with an amount of 35$ will get online access to the movie, but also everybody else who wants to see it will be able to rent it or stream it on their devices. But honestly, I think that nothing beats the “going to the cinema” experience.

For a movie to be released in selected theaters in multiple countries and available to rent and purchase and watch on-demand worldwide, all on the same day? It’s pretty much unheard of. And since everything about this movie is unprecedented, I’m pleased that our distribution plans are too. -Says Rob Thomas in his post.

He also states that one of the reason the studio can;t get the veronica Mars movie in more theaters is because everyone who backed the project with more 35$ was promised a digital copy with the theatrical release of the movie.

Getting into more theaters might also have been easier if we hadn’t promised that backers at $35 and up would receive digital copies of the movie within a few days of the film’s release. It’s basic math: movie theaters try to show movies that people will come out to see, and that’s a riskier proposition when 65,000+ people get copies of the movie on opening weekend. (Rob Thomas)

I don’t really buy this, I think that the real reason is that the studio’s predictions on how well would the movie do on the Box Office isn’t as optimistic so they try to pull as much revenue as they can. Also it looks like they are trying to minimize the effect of the fact that the movie would also be available for download in a nice crispy resolution through piracy channels. I mean out of 65000 copies one will absolutely land on torrent sites.

You gotta handed to Rob Thomas and the studio really, this is the first time anything like this happens, I am not sure if they know what to expect, but maybe this will prove to be a new way of releasing movies.

My advice, go see it in the theaters, even if you backed the movie and you would have a digital download on March 14th, go out with your girlfriend, boyfriend, fellow marshmallows or whatever and make a nice evening out of it. Going to the cinema isn’t just about to see the movie, well maybe it is these days, but it used to be a lot more fun even with bad movies.
