The Box Office sequels battle – week 2

Posted on June 19, 2014April 27, 2015 by Slavco Stojanoski

Will How To Train Your Dragon 2 provide enough dragon power to top the Box Office in its second week of showing in cinemas across America and beat Tatum and Hill in 22 Jump Street.

We had an interesting situation last weekend where two sequels were premiering, one was the sequel of the action comedy 21 Jump Street titled, of course, 22 Jump Street (creative, non?) and the second was the How To Train Your Dragon sequel, titled the same with a the number 2 at the end  (even less creative).

By the end of the weekend 22 Jump Street ended up at the top with $57M while HTTYD2 grossed enough for the second spot $49.5M. Both filmed outperformed their originals, with 22 Jump Street gaining 22 million dollars plus, but HTTYD2 had only a “little improvement” in revenue when back in 2013 grossed almost $44M.

Last year these two films premiered within two weeks so there’s no place for real comparison, but still let’s make one :).

Now if we look at the total box office results for the previous two films we can see that even though the opening weekends are not that far apart in gross revenue $44M to $35M the grand total of the two films are 494 million dollars for How To Train Your Dragon (2013) double to that of 21 Jump Street which is 201 million dollars.

If we consider that this week there are no new big players at the box office (Think Like A Man Too and Jersey Boys premiere tomorrow 20 June) chances are HTTYD2 and 22 Jump Street will still be at position 1 and 2. What I am wondering is whether HTTYD2 will have enough dragon power to slide past 22 Jump Street and emerge as victor in the second week of their worldwide release.

Let’s not forget the fact that movies like 22 Jump Street tend to have a huge drop in revenue the second week, while animations tend to keep that change small. Frozen for example remained in the top 5 for almost two months after it’s release date, which is kind of achievement these days.

What do you think? Would you go and see 22 Jump Street or HTTYD2?
