Chaos Walking is the latest young-adult book adaptation by Lionsgate. The movie stars Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, Mads Mikkelsen and Damien Bichir. This is a cast that any studio would wish for, yet the movie under delivered all over the place.
It is a neutral movie in a sense that you just don’t care what’s happening. This is thanks to the fact that it is basically a movie about two hikers in the woods. Most of the screen time is the two leads, Ridley and Holland running or walking through a forest.
Great setting, but little is shown
Despite the fact that the movie is set in 2257AD on a newly settled world, which already has a native sentient species called the Spackle, what you get is hiking. And this is not all, not only do the humans are aliens on a new habitable planet, on this planet all your thoughts and dreams are heard out loud by everyone (and seen to a degree). Although, this happens only to the men and not the women, which is the main plot drive.
Chaos Walking for young-adult type of audience, has some disturbing moments, like the fact that the women of one town were all killed by the men. But the most disturbing moment is with the puppy drowning preacher.
The Noise, or all your thoughts on display is not explored enough, and when I say enough, I mean not at all. The reason for that is perhaps it was intended for any sequels. Considering how much time is spent on pointless scenes, there was room for the Noise to get more attention and explanation.
I can’t really speak on the actors performances as the script is very limited on emotions or acting. However, their walking through the forest was excellent. 😀
Oh , yeah, Tom Holland’s character name is Tod Hewitt, in case you missed it.
Conclusion:
I think that the end result of the movie is a message that men are evil. Due to the fact the movie tries to be overly woke and it suffers to develop the other aspects of what makes a movie a good movie. There isn’t any memorable dialogue, the setting of the movie is too simple visually, although in story it should be quite overwhelming. As the budhet of the Chaos Walking is $100 million, you can’t help but wonder how they spent it.
The conflicts between the characters are started but left unfinished or to a very disappointing resolution.
